San Martín Tilcajete, along with San Antonio Arrazola and La Union Tejalapan, is among the Oaxacan villages passionately devoted to crafting and painting copal wood into extraordinary, dream-inspired creatures. Although the alebrije concept (pronounced ah-lay-bree-hay) originated with Mexico City artist Pedro Linares, it is Oaxaca’s talented artisans who have embraced and elevated this vibrant tradition into an enduring cultural art form.
