The Pleasantville Color Cartoon was created by the artist as the final study for the Frank Romero mural that appears in the 1998 Academy Award nominated film Pleasantville starring Jeffrey Daniels, Tobey McGuire and Reese Witherspoon, written and directed by Gary Ross.  In the black and white movie, the introduction of Frank’s mural, with its glorious colors and images that echo the themes of the film, is a marvelous highlight.  The 30 ft by 10 ft mural is part of MOLAA’s collection. The Pleasantville Color Cartoon captures all the murals vibrancy.

About Frank Romero

Frank Romero is a renowned Chicano artist celebrated for his vibrant, colorful works that capture the cultural and social landscapes of Los Angeles. Born in East Los Angeles in 1941, Romero is a founding member of the Los Four collective, a pioneering group of Chicano artists whose historic 1974 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was the country’s first show of Chicano art at a major art institution. His work blends elements of Mexican-American heritage with contemporary urban themes, often addressing issues like cultural identity, social justice, and the beauty of everyday life in the city.

Romero's signature style incorporates bold colors, graphic forms, and imagery drawn from the streets of L.A., including freeways, palm trees, and iconic landmarks. Frank’s works are in some of the most important corporate and museum collections in the world including the Los Angele County Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Cheech, the Carnegie, the Alta Med Collection, and many more.   MOLAA celebrated his career with the landmark 2017 comprehensive retrospective Dreamland exhibition.

In addition to painting, Romero has worked as a designer and muralist, contributing to public art projects across Los Angeles. His legacy is deeply tied to the Chicano art movement and its role in advocating for visibility, representation, and empowerment for Mexican-American communities.
